EXHIBITION DESCRIPTION
TFalse Alternatives, brings together 15 contemporary cultural practices, that instigates conversations around the theory that inspired its title. The False Alternative postulates that one does not consider all possibilities within a given situation. Instead it places an argument, thought or our existence within a binary. The resulting invisibility, brought on predominantly by a pattern of selective erasure, validates skewed perceptions of ourselves and the mesh of meanings created by our relationships. This includes inter-personal dynamics as well as the ones we develop as a community within various socio-political and cultural contexts. However, it is within the ‘inbetweens’ that all of the vulnerabilities, the failures, the fears and most importantly the questions, exist. Questions that are important to ask, even if there are no answers, because it is this naked curiosity that allows for us to grow. It slowly, renders the invisible, visible. It is this visibility that the artists in the exhibition ‘False Alternatives’ provoke, while not necessarily being pre-occupied with providing solutions or answers or alternatives. More importantly the 15 practices presented allows for us to ‘see’ the limitations of looking at the world in black and white.
