Born at Madhira, Telangana state, Surya Prakash studied painting in Hyderabad and later worked under well-known artist Ram Kumar in New Delhi. Surya is avidly credited as a pivotal agent in promoting modern art in his home state at Hyderabad, organizing various camps and exhibitions at a time when there were no such facilities available. The artist has continued to paint his own canvases with a diligence that suits an impressionist. He captures the heavenliness of native landscapes in various hues focusing on the landscapes and forestscapes sensitively and consistently. Each and every work appears to record different shades of the beauty of nature that lies around him- as if an act of homage and an expression of gratitude. There exists luminosity and an enchantment that seduces the onlooker. The translucence of colours and an exuberance of forms treated with an almost microscopic clarity are the distinctive features of his work. He makes no attempt to ascribe meaning to his paintings, even refraining most of the time from titling the works, though like catalysts they entice and engage the viewer to ‘experience’ nature. The national exhibitions of the 70s and 80s made Surya Prakash a well known name in the Indian art scene. He has been on advisory boards of various national arts institutions and his work has been exhibited all over the world in group and solo shows. Several public and private collections hold his work, and one can see a substantial body on display in the collections at the L.V. Prasad Eye Institute and at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, both in Hyderabad. His awards include the National Award, gold medals by Hyderabad Art Society and Lalit Kala Akademi, Andhra Pradesh, Hamsa award by the Andhra Pradesh government. He was conferred the title of “Kala Vibhushan” by the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society, New Delhi. Surya Prakash lives and works in Hyderabad.
